I am going to change the filter and the fluid in my 77's C-6 transmission. My truck is a 150 4x4,tomorrow I am going to get the fluid and the filter from autozone but I don't know how much ATF i need.Since the fluid is old I am planning to drain the torque converter too. Also when i drain my torque converter is it going to fill back up with the trans,or will I have to take it off to fill it.Also is that crossmember hard to remove, looks straight forward but if it is Id rather be expecting it.
Buy a case of transmission fluid.
Then refill when before the start of the engine. Make sure to keep the transmission full of sufficient trans fluid during refill phase.
Turn off engine, remove transmission return line at radiator. Refill transmission to full line on transmission dip stick. Have fluid drain into drain pan while keep transmission in full line, till transmission fluid draining is clean fluid. Reconnect and refill.
i know the troque converter holds a gallon. and the tranny i believe holds 6 quarts. you can drain the traq converter by the drain plug and the tranny when removing the pain to put the new filter on.
The change to dexron transmission fluid happened in May 1976 transmission build date. All C6 in model year 1977 and newer use dexron. A C6 uses 12-13 qts of fluid if fully drained.
I had a C6 rebuilt in 1998. I recently drained it to do a motor job. Can I use Dexron III/Mercon or Mercon V instead of Type F wihich is getting harder to find.
