I've got an 87 F-350 with a 460 with headers. Tonight I developed a ticking sound on the right side - At first I thought it was the gasket at the collector but now I think it's the gasket where the headers connect to the engine. I can do window motors, radiators, etc. but this looks tight and maybe a job for the exhaust shop. If I'm right, how much $$$ do you think it should cost and second, should I do both sides while I'm at it?
Thanks
OK - I got under it and I can feel air bursts coming from the gasket where the collectors hook up to the exhaust so I think that's it (my 12 year old daughter really enjoyed revving up the motor..)
Anyway - I had these replaced about 6 months ago - what could I do to make them last longer? Also, it looks like they are warped a little and don't fit totally flush together.
Do they make thicker ones? More durable? I'm all ears..
Thanks
Try some copper or aluminum deadsoft reusable gaskets. They should last almost forever. I think the cost is about $40 for the headers and $20 for the collecters. You should be able to get them at your local parts store.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 24-Apr-02 AT 01:49 AM (EST)]I called and talked to the manufacturer at one shop, then I talked to Summit, here is the deal with those. The copper, aluminum, whatever metal ones should have the heads o-ringed to get them to seal properly. I can't have my truck down that long to get the heads worked on, so I bought some Fel-pro gaskets with the rings and what not in them, anyways I have had them in for about six months and they haven't blown yet. As far as the collectors go, haven't had a problem yet, when you come up with something that works let me know please, anytime you find something that works good, share the wealth, all us info junkies love to know everything we can. The response would be posted in the Tech and garage tips section. Hope this helps.
Just an update - It was leaking in both places - It's much more quiet than it ever has been.
Just for reference - a local shop (Orlando) charged me $105 for replacing both the header and collector gaskets - that price included labor and the gaskets which were upgraded from the fiber ones they replaced. I thought it was pretty fair price plus I've still got skin on my knuckles..
