steering issues

I have an 05 f250 with 160k. Ball joints replaced 50k ago and just did tie rod ends...... It seems like something is binding up when I turn. I can feel resistance while turning and then a pop as I continue turning. After the wheels straighten out,the truck drives like a shopping cart down the road. Generally I can shake the steering wheel back and forth until whatever is binding loosens up and the truck drives fine..... until the next hard turn....... I was thinking gear box. Anybody have any other ideas?

If there is nothing obvious in the steering linkage or ball joints then the only thing left is the steering gear box. I replaced almost everything under the front end of mine and can tell you it's pretty straight forward design.

You can put the front axle on jack stands and have someone turn the wheel lock to lock and look for binding. If none is found then it's most likely a bad steering gear box.
