I recently purchased a 94' F-150 XL shortbed, and im having problems with the steering. When I turn the wheel, it doesn't straighten back up, I have to pull it back. I checked the ball joints, and they seem fine. I dont have a clue? Any help would be appreciated.
A couple things to look at... How is the front end alignment? Are the tires worn unevenly? An out-of-line front end can cause the steering not to return. You said the balljoints looked good but did you take off the tie rod ends to see how tight the steering knuckle is? Improperly installed balljoints can cause the knuckle to bind up causing hard steering. I would start with these two items and work from there.
On your steering box there may be an adjustment for the worm gear inside the box. This can be tightened to remove excess slack from your steering. If this adjustment is too tight it will also prevent the steering from returning by itself.
Ah yes, memory steer. I have the same problem, to go along with that big ol' dead spot in the steering. The ball joints can look good, even feel good (mine) but since they're sealed-for-life originals, they may still be bad since there's no way to grease them and keep them free. Pull the tie rod ends loose and turn the wheels by hand. If they're tight - the ball joints are bad.
Check ball joints as suggested. My guess is the gearbox has been over adjusted. Loosen jamnut on top of box, backoff stud half turn, try steering. May need more or less. This adjustment as stated, is to adjust pitman shaft as normal wear occurs. It is not a cure for a worn out gear. Adjust carefully. You did not mention miles. How did you check ball joints?
