okay 1979 f250 4x4 front disc brakes ...driving home from my friends tonight i hear a clunking noise comming from my front end.. it starts at 5mph and stops at 20 mph.... it sounds like the left side...lug nuts are tight, and nothing appears to be wrong visually.. the brake caliper has a little bit of play (movement back and forth) any idea what it might be guys???
Possibly slack in the shock bushings.. look over all the rubber bushings in the front end very closely for clean spots (shiny metal or areas with no dirt) for possible areas with play. What shape are the bolts in?
Does it clunk when doing something specific like gassing braking or turning?
Probably slack in the shock bushings or play somewhere in the track arm, radius, srut arm or c bushings.. look over all the rubber bushings in the front end very closely for clean spots (shiny metal or areas with no dirt) for possible areas with play.

during acceleration from 5mph to 20 mph, braking from 20 to 5 mph and turning at 10 to 5mph it makes the noise...
First off I think you already answer your question before you ever typed one letter on here asking for help. You said the caliper is loose moving backing and forth? Start by tightening it down. There should be no movement other than the pads sliding in and out on the sliders from applying and letting of the pedal. Also like mentioned before check all bushings and bolts. However your f250 doesn't have radius arms, be sure to check the leaf spring bushings. Also look at the axle ujoints, ball joints, and tie rod ends. They too should be nice and tight, not having any play in them at all.
Did you just replace the front brakes and leave the spring tab out when you put the caliper lock bar in place? DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN THE BOLT!! Did the spring tab break ?
Yes what they said, there should be NO play free movement or slack in your caliper when its mounted.
Front axle u joint? Brake dust shield have some thing caught in it? Have you cked your front dif gear oil level lately?
Steering damper bushing shot? When is the last time you repacked the front hubs?
Fuzzy dice caught in the fan? Sorry I am a smart aleck by nature. lol
77 & 79 gave a good check list.. I had one of the retainer nuts that hold the front bearing tight come loose and it made the damndest noise.. regreasing my hubs is a regular thing for me now..
