Ok guys I'm needing some help please. I have a "grinding" noise in my front end, but only when I am driving 70 mph and only 70. It sounds like it is coming from the end of the axles somewhere. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys.
Yep mine had a grinding sound at high speeds and it turned out to be one of the calipers constantly rubbing on the rotor due to a rusty spring that wouldn't release it. Give the breaks a good inspection.
I would say do 71 mph, but then you might think I am making lite of this.
I would say either the hubs, or a slide pin is hanging up in the caliper. Can you see if your pads are wearing even, in and outter? Looking at your sig, you don't have 4x4, so I would check these things.
try going 75 then put it in neutral and see if the noise is still there when the drivetrain is disengaged. And note the RPM and try the same rpm in different gears, just to eliminate that. 70 is a pretty dang high speed for a noise to show up at, by that speed most noises quickly transition to squeek, bang and stop mode.
Might just be your tires. Certaint tires have a resonance at a certaint frequency (speed). My tires do it at 20-21mph but no where else. Have you changed tires since the noise showed up?
i just had that problem. jack the truck up and rotate the tires. if it makes a grinding noise then you need to replace your needle bearing or whole hub. mine was the whole hub. easy to replace
Thanks for all of the help guys. Sorry it's taken so long to get back on here. Checked the brakes out two of the pins were frozen - fixed those - noise still there. Rotated the tires - didn't fix it. Next step will be looking at the hubs. How expensive are the hubs if that is what it is, should I just go ahead and get warn hubs? If so is there anything else I need to do to do the switch or is it just a matter of taking the factory ones out and putting the warns in?
Chances are your 4x4 hubs are okay, but the unit hub itself has bearings that are hosed. Those unit hubs aren't cheap, around $330 I think from powerstrokeshop.com.
Are you talking about the wheel and hub assembly that is held on by 4 bolts on the backside? If so I changed them on my last Powerstroke but they never made that noise and it made play in the wheel when I raised that truck and checked for any looseness. The front end seems solid except for this noise. You could very possibly be right I just wanted to give you guys all of the info I could so you can help all you can. Is there a way to look at the bearings to see?
I need to know what everyone would do. I have a chance to buy some Hub Assemblies cheap and need to know if this is what is probably making the noise at that certain speed. My last truck, when I jacked the truck up I had some really bad play in all directions with the tire still on, and you could see that it was in the Hub Assembly and not the ball joints. But this truck has no play in the front end, could this just be an early sign of it heading south. I was also thinking that it could be in my torque converter, Thanks guys.
