Long story short I swapped my 01 motor with one from a 96 e350 with 100k. Well putting it back together I neglected to label 1 wire... apparently the glow plugs to starter solenoid(at the starter solenoid). I put it where I thought I took it off of (the big post closest to the front of the truck) and after priming it up and some long strong cranks she ran choppy and then threw the ses light. I shut it down and for whatever reason, my smart *** switched the glow plug wire to the opposite post on the starter solenoid. After trying to start the truck... with a lot clicking, light flickering and slow cranking I switched it back to the original position Now I can't get her to crank...? I installed a new starter(reman) and solenoid and still just get a half of a crank and clicking.
What could I have done? I believe the ses light is another issue however I need it running to pull the code (s).
Any ideas guys?
Why do you need it running to pull the codes? If you put the glow plugs on the always hot post on the solenoid you might have drained your batteries (and hurt your glow plugs). Have you charged your batteries or watched voltage while cranking?
Im by myself so no I couldnt watch the voltage on my multi meter but on the dash it crashes sharply as I try to crank it. I have no charger so I hooked up to my maxima and had it running for about 20 mins on jumpers before I tried again and got a few more cranks. The batts are newish (about a year). so I guess my next attempt would be to charge or swap the batts? Or get someone to help me do a load test on them.
I don't think your maxima is going to put out enough juice to jump the truck. Find a way to charge the batteries or plan on leaving the maxima running a very long time.
You don't need the SES light to be on to check the codes. If the light came on, the codes are stored. You just need the key to be on and the PCM to be powered up.
So I let it charge and shes cranking good and strong. Thanks alot.
It really sounds awefull turning it over... a kind of popping noise I havent heard before. Is it ok to jump the terminals on the the solenoid so I can be in the engine compartment to hear where its coming from?
So it seems my glow plug relay is shot. I ohmed out the the glow plugs at 1.0 thru the vc harness. I guess that means theyre good. The noise im hearing is like a cupping sound coming from the intake. I never heard this with my old motor. I also never cranked it with the intake spyder off. Has anyone else ever heard this?
I definitely didnt make that sound before I shorted the gp solenoid/relay.
