I determined that the gas smell was coming from the 50 year old gas filler hose. It had deteriorated to the point that it was going to break into pieces and fall off.
That's about an hour job I tell myself. I have the grommet and hose.
As usual, getting it apart was easy, that only took about 10 minutes.
I go to put it back together and I find that the filler hose I thought I had was for the Mustang, its a much larger diameter than the F100 hose.
Off to auto parts I go.
No one has a 1 3/4 ID fuel hose.
I finally find one at a tractor place. Its $1 an inch.
I get home and proceed to drop it down the hole. I fished it out with a coat hanger.
It was an easy job, only it took 4 hours, not 1 hour.
The misses doesn't understand why I never seem to get much done.
The ability to laugh at ones self, is a good quality to have. If it can't be fixed with a hammer, your not hitting it hard enough.
Let your wife know, working on your truck is therapeutic, this allows you to spend "Quality time" with her.
I know the OP was trying to get the thing fixed quickly, but you can buy new replacements for very little $ from Dennis Carpenter and most other vendors. Radiator hose rubber will not last!
I know you were in a need and couldn't wait, but for others don't forget about NOS. I've bought them for less than Carpenter sells the reproductions. They want $10. NOS can be had for less. Here's one online for $7.20, but I think I paid $5 each for the last ones I bought. Shipping might tip the scale but I can always find something else to buy so they combine shipping.
Hoss, You wrote "No one has a 1 3/4 ID fuel hose." I have seen plenty 1/4" ID, 5/16" ID, and some 3/8" ID fuel hose but 1 3/4" ID hose is radiator hose size not Ford truck gas line size, that I am aware of.
He's talking about the hose that goes from the metal gas filler pipe to the tank. It's 1.8" inside diameter and 3.62" long according to the MPC.
Part # C1TB-9047-A
I'm sure you know the part, John. When you are sitting in the drivers seat it is just over the left shoulder and down a bit. Hose clamps on either end.
Todays project was installing the vent cable pulls. I removed the left side and installed a new one. DC sent me the wrong *****, they are threaded, the vent pull **** slides on. I will have to give them a call tomorrow.
I don't need the right pull, but the PO put a giant hole there for something. Whatever it was is long gone.
I took the left pull and polished it up on the polishing wheel. I hated to do this to a good pull, but I cut the cable and sleeve off it and installed the bezel with a fender washer. A little gorilla glue to keep the pull in and a new **** insert and I have a dummy cable pull that looks like it belongs there covering a hole in the dash.
I also put insulation on the cab roof. We are going to tackle the headliner this weekend.
