I punch the bottom and wait a few minutes, but there's still oil coming out around the edge of the filter. No biggie to me because I use nitrile gloves.
One tip for draining the oil from the sump is to use a Fumoto valve. It replaces the drain plug with a valve. You can even attach a rubber hose to it, which is what I do, and then drain directly into your recycle container. Makes the job much simpler.
Those apparently didn't seem to work too well with the composite pans, but I realize those are limited edition now.
One thing I miss about my 6.0 is the oil filter. Easiest oil change ever. I had a Fumoto valve on that truck, and now I have one on my 6.7. I feel better about this one because it faces rearward instead of down. On my last oil change I punched a hole in the bottom of the filter (motorcraft) with an awl. It seemed to drain pretty completely. I didn't have any spillage when I loosened it.
