A spare tire is my current Achilles Heel.
The universe was looking out for me though; Guy at the parts store said he didn't have a fuel pump for me on Thursday but went into the back and checked anyway. Not only did he have a pump, it was also a Carter like original and then he goes on to say "We don't even carry Carter." Fine, I'll take it. Got that replaced yesterday and I'm back to wheelin'. It is the original pump that I took off and it's the rebuildable type.
Off to get some mulch...
You will need a newer production pump. Back when I was still dealing with gas engines, usually I would go through three or four pumps in a six month span until the boxes started looking newer, then they'd last a year or so. Modern gas sucks. IMO, the best fix would be to put a blank off plate on the fuel pump mount and run a good quality electric with a regulator and return right before the carb. An added bonus is no more vapor lock worries-
The electric pump is a good idea. I've been running one in series with my mechanical pump for many years. It has a switch and is used for getting gas to the carburetor when I switch tanks when one runs dry.
Box looked very modern. To the point of having an EFI pump on the box. Probably special ordered and not picked up versus lying around for a decade. But I do hear what you are saying. I'm still plugged into the old carb market and they are changing materials to accommodate modern fuels as long as it's common. Read that as something later than a Stromberg 97, though the toilet bowls have made a comeback in repro...
Put an electric pump on it. As far as road service, go with Good Sam. They'll tow everything you have and their road service contractors are set up to tow big stuff like motorhomes. They'll tow just about any vehicle you own. And, you do use the truck to pull an RV trailer, don't you?
EFI has been around in various forms since the 60s, with a few different mechanical systems much earlier than that. A pump from the early 2000s or earlier will most likely not be compatible with the E10 they force on us now.
