Transmission

Hey everyone, so I love the **** out of my old truck, treat her like my baby and today I may of done something bad.its. 1990 f250 2wd 7.3 with a c6 tran. Now the good news is the truck has 154xxx original miles and truck is rust free. I never drive over 65, but today I got her to 75mph for about 3 hours total. 1.5 each way with not enough time to really cool in between trips. Since I got my truck 2 years ago from my grandpa who got it new, It's had a shudder or studder in the transmission from 1st to 2nd and a smaller one from 2nd to third. Some days it's barleys anything, I can take my foot off the gas for a second while it shifts and it feels decently smooth, some days its rougher but overall it's not bad and hasn't got worse, or at least to much worse if maybe I hadn't noticed from driving everyday, since I had it. Today I drove down to Austin and it was dead into a Texas wind so it felt rough at 75 but defiantly not to bad, on the way back downwind it still felt different, so I stopped and looked and i had a ****load of transmission fluid on my pan so i checked and their wasnt even enough for the dipstick to read anything. Igot extremely lucky that their was a auto stor within 20 min of me. On my way to the store TWICE when shifting from 1 to 2nd my truck like skipped gears or something and the rpm went thru the roof, I let off the gas and it shifted. Got to store and filled her up and made sure I got back full, I think it's just a leak in gasket. The rest of the way home it felt different, but not bad and didn't have the weird miss gear thing again. Ill drive it tomorrow and see how it feels but I'm scared. If you can help please do, I need my baby for another 2 years of college. Thanks

when was the last time you changed the trans fluid and filter?
it sounds like it has been a long time, and the new fluid is actually doing its job.
trans fluid and filter should be changed every 30-35k miles.

The trans fluid was changed just last summer. No doubt less than 15 thousand miles ago. I'm just worried if running out of fld will do more damage

when htey run low on fluid they can burn up the clutch packs.
the only way to really know is to fill it up and drive it. if it starts shifting funny or not going into gear, it will need rebuilding.
or it could be fine. it really all depends on how long it ran low and how hot it got.

Well it was over 100 yesterday so I imagine she got pretty hot. I drove today, no problems going in gear, and the shifts felt about the same but it felt like took longer if that were to make any sense. Example being if it shift to second at 15 moh it would start at 15 and shift by 16now it feel like 15 and completely shifts by late 17 18 so it almost feels like I have to accelerate thru and then let off the gas as it shifts otherwise their will be the shudder. Would you know the estimate on getting it rebuilt? I'm in school and now ay I have time to ATTEMPT to fix it myself

luckily, a C-6 is pretty easy to rebuild, and therefore is fairly cheap to do too.
the last one i had done cost me $575, and that was including replacing a worn out planetary housing.

Well unfortunatly the problem was 100 percent on me. I checked the fluid while in park and not neutral, I didn't know it made a difference, so I put way to much fluid in. It seems back to normal or at least better now that I pumped it out, now I can only hope their was no damage done. Probably 65 75 miles with high fluid. But thank you for the advise and god bless

just keep an eye on the fluid level. if it seems to be shifting ok,
you will probably be fine with the way it is.
