when i first acquired the van it suffered with low power and got terrible fuel mileage, after extensive exhaust mods and replacing the plugs wires cap and rotor the van runs GREAT but the engine still has slight misfire that i attribute to 22 yr old injectors that probably need a good cleaning, what is an effective treatment ?
I really don't want to remove or replace the injectors, what alternatives do i have with my 1992 E150 351 Windsor SD/EFI ?
Techron by Chevron. Other than running Top Tier gasolines (look these up on the Internet), the additive I believe in is Techon. Costco now has it for $20 for 6 bottles when it's on sale.
In the prehistoric days, I cannot tell you how many used cars (I used to buy and sell cars) would have a miraculous response to Gumout. That was in the day of carburetors. Now, whenever a car starts running funny (or every few thousand miles when a car starts running bad) I will use Techron and it can often make a difference. If you need cleaning beyond that, I've got nothing.
buy the chevron or any quality fuel, then add either seafoam to the tank or berryman B-12, about the same as the seafoam but cheaper. I have several motorcycles that sit for a while and they get gummed up. Add a partial can to low amount of fuel run and let set for a day or so. Usually works. In your case with minimum fuel in tank add a can or 2 of the product, crank, run if you can, shut off and let sit for a day or so, repeat. Then fill with clean fuel and take out and run for about 100 miles or so, unless it hasn't worked. Then you will be replacing the injectors as most chem mixes really dont work if really gummed up. There was a outfit forget the name that pressure cleaned the injector systems at some shops while still in vehicle, maybe look up on search engine and see what/where it can be found.
While I've not yet had occasion to replace/remove or even inspect my injectors I've been using Techron Concentrate 2x 12 oz bottles in a full tank every 3K miles. I have a while to go before plugs will be changed again at a 50K mile interval it'll be interesting to see its effect, sure to be evident in their condition. I'll be more than happy to document that procedure but it'll be a while.
There are claimed services either DIY with semi-specialized gear or for-hire shops doing injector cleaning on-vehicle but to my knowledge no one in these van forums has done this. Perhaps post this same question in the appropriate engine forum covering your motor.
Once the injectors are known clean use Techron Concentrate as a way to keep them clean.
