F1boxing plates

I have a 50 ford f1 and plan to install mustang ll front suspension. I need to weld in boxing plates but noticed the bottom frame rail is wider than the top rail. My guest ion is do I have to cut or grind down the bottom rail to fit the boxing plates in?

Morning Guy and welcome to FTE..

there is no need to alter the frame rails...boxing plates should be around 1/8" to 3/16" and I'd box back to the cab mounts.

just make sure the rails are clean at the weld points. Wire brush, scrape, flap wheel them shiny , then give all the weld spots a good protective coating.. I think it's best to fit the plates inside the rail instead of over and butted up against the rail..

later
John

Hey Contri,
Welcome aboard! It's good to see another '50 F1 being saved.
There is an ongoing thread on here from drptop70ss showing the installation of a Jag front suspension & the boxing plates he used to strengthen his frame. I've attached the pics below from drptop's thread to show how he put them inside the frame as Jniolin suggests above.

Good luck over there in California. Post some pics when you get a chance.
If you find yourself on here quite a bit - becoming a member get's rid of most of the annoying advertising & it enables you to post pics directly from your hard drive using a paperclip icon.

Yes you need to trim the wider rail, Most mustang II kits fit inside rails so You need to have the inside of rails parallel with the outside. As far as welding, a corner to corner weld works well so You grind it smooth You do not remove too much of the weld bead.

Agreed, I didnt have to trim mine to install the jag. I cut my boxing plates to fit inside the rails and then set the top edge of the plate just outside the frame edge which gives a good "L" corner to weld in the plate. Grinding the top smooth removed very little of the weld. Bottom I just burned it in except for the very front of the plate which also has a corner weld.
