Hi Y'all. I have a 2010 XLT CrewCab 5.4 V8. I have a CAI installed and I was looking at putting a tuner on as my next major mod. I've heard good things about the EDGE tuners and the SCT's from 5 Star Tuning. I was hoping that some of y'all would help and give me the pro's and con's. Any major things to take into consideration and such. A little background info on my truck; I use it as a daily driver, don't tow regularly, and am mainly looking to get better mileage and throttle response and performance. Thanks in advance everyone.
You might get better throttle response because the tuning might ask for more fuel sooner, but better milage? Doubtful. If you added all the mpg claims made by makers of tuners, intakes, exhaust, etc, your truck would run on fumes alone. My opinion, leave it alone. Monitor tire pressure, change the oil, service the trans and diffs etc. Ford as well as all the other makers are competing for mpg. If they could get more from something as simple as an intake, they would. Many claims of more flow from an intake is often achieved by sacrificing filtration. Although I could be wrong.
I have a 2010 QC/LB 4x4 with the 5.4. I have no mods to it, and decided to go with the straight forwad SCT tuner, strategy tunes. Note: I have the ability to get custom dyno tunes, (yes, done on a dyno in real-time), but I am satisfied with the "canned" tunes for now.
Throttle lag is pretty much gone, part throttle tip-in is immediate. When you tweak the throttle, it can be felt immediately.
Trans shifts are much firmer, but I would prefer even firmer
shifts are much quicker, and full throttle shifts are much faster
MPG has increased a solid 0.9 mpg
I was so pleassed with the tuner, I put one on my wife identical truck. She is very pleased with the results, and is seeing the same increase in fuel mileage.
We are both running the 93 octane strategy tune, with the trans settings at +25%.
One thing with the tunes. It took about a week, and about 250 miles or so for everything to really come into play. On the first drive, I was not thrilled with the results, but after a few trips, the difference was noticable.
