Hey guys, I have a 99 f350 7.3l, it has 83000 orig. miles and the torque converter is original as well but is making a little noise. I want to know what converter to put in it, I want to stay stock (and probably will) so would it be a terrible thing to buy a remaned one from the dealer where I buy all my parts from. I literally go 500 miles a year with it, I do not tow/plow at all (2wd by the way), I dont have a tuner at all, truck is all stock and transmission has clean fluid and shifts fine but I am going to have it serviced anyway and im generally easy on it. I just want to know what your guys opinion is on a stock TC remaned. Thanks in advance
If I was going to the trouble/cost of replacing a torque converter, I would replace with a new one. Labor is everything to me, parts are cheap. Either I do it (and nearly kill myself) or I pay someone lots of money to do it for me. So, I put in the best parts I can find in either case. I only want to do the job once.
I would bet the noise you are hearing sounds like it has mables in it or something to that effect. Well that is caused by the cheap material that the factory T.C. cover is made out of. Here is a photo of what happens to a stock t.c. cover.
Now even though you don't tow and it is all stock I would say get a t.c. with a billet cover. Reman's aren't all bad it depends who's reman it is. So I would NOT get a reman from the dealer ! You really don't need a fancy 3 disc billet t.c. either. But if you want to spend the money it would be money well spent. I think a quality single disc with a billet cover would be your best bang for the buck for your needs.
Recon by Transtar are a good reman t.c. at a fair price.
These are just a few examples of a quality remans at a fair price. Of course there are better ones out there but they cost between $800-$1000 which would be over kill in your case. Just something to think about.
