Using coolant "flush" detergent?

I read a long thread from years back with a lot of info from "Gooch" on flushing coolant systems and proper coolant type to use in our Powerstrokes. However, I didn't notice any mention of using a "flush" detergent. Or I just over looked it. Is it recommended at all.

Also, would it hurt my old '84 302 F-150 to run a heavy duty diesel coolant as well. And for that matter my wife's Dodge Caravan. I already run a 15w-40 diesel oil in them.

Unless you've had some problems or been experiencing contamination, I'd skip any kind of flush additive.

Unless you have an EGR Cooler, there would be no reason as Iron content is minimal if at all. Just one more reason we'll drive these 7.3's until their last breath!

7.3's don't have EGR coolers like the 6.0's do.

There was a big discussions earlier about a dishwasher detergent to clean up mess when engine oil mixed with coolant from oil cooler.

I did use the prestone flush from wall mart in my recent elc changeover. I figured... after being run with the green stuff for 418k miles(on the clock when i swapped it over to elc) it was probably pretty nasty in there.

It was.

Dirty gunk and rust water kept coming out for a steady 4 cycles of fill, drain , fill with distilled.

I ran my finger aroud the rim of the inside of the degass bottle yesterday while i was waiting on the oil pan to drain for oil change.

I got some black soot residue.

Our 6.0 brothers will do that when they need to clean their engine internals due to oil intrusion into the coolant system.

Ok, it's had green stuff in it since I bought it in April. I'm in the process of fluid/filter changes so I know what I'm working with.

Don't use Bars coolant flush. A friend of mine flushed his OBS with it a month ago and his truck is in my shop with five cups leaking know. I'm not 100% sure this caused his cup problem but it's odd that over half his cups are leaking now.

Correct me if i'm wrong, and still trying figure out what I need to do but E99 you don't want to use any extended life coolant ( just opened a whole can of worms) Not sure what year your truck is bigcountry1009.

According to his profile, his 7.3L is a 2001 MY so he's ok to use ELC.

As for your rig Scott, traditional "green" with required SCA package and proper testing twice a year and you'll be fine.

Thanks Stewart,
That pretty much summed it up for me.

Yessir, mine is an '01 7.3L. It has 243,000 on it. I'm not sure what exactly is in so I'm changing it out just to know.

Why can't you run ELC in E99 7.3's? Just asking.
