E40d compatability

Hey everyone, i am looking at a parts truck to use for a front end, engine core and whatever else i find. My truck is a 1996 F250 auto and the donor truck is a 1990 F350 auto.

Do these transmissions interchange from each truck or was there a lot of changes to them along the way? And if there were a lot of changes can i make the 1990 E40d as good as a newer one?

1990-1994 E4ODs are interchangeable. 95-97 are interchangeable. A 1990-94 can be rebuilt with 95-97 Internals, but must retain the 90-94 solenoid pack to work in a 1990-1994 truck.

How much of the internals are different? This tranny was rebuilt a year or so ago so i was hoping to have it as a spare for my truck if i need one... probably best to sell it and recover the money i guess.

Different bellhousings between diesel and gas. Also a unique bellhousing on the 460. Gas 4.9 through 5.8 are the same bellhousing, but watch the balance on the flexplate.

Also different tailshafts between 4X4 and 4X2

They're not terribly different inside, but the 95-97 improvements hugely enhance durability.

If the 90-94 transmission was rebuild last year by a good shop, it is very likely (extremely likely actually), that the 95-97 components were installed into it, since they supersede the earlier stuff.

A big giveaway is to look at the front pump on the transmission. There should be a code stamped into it that starts with "RF". An RF-F5 would be the updated '95 pump, if it says RF-F0, it still has the original 1990 pump in it.

I'm in kind of the same boat my 93 f250 tranny is done only has 1st an 2nd gear, can I interchange my tranny with a e40d out of a 97 e350 series? Both are automatics jus mine is a 460 big block an the e350 is a 5.4 triton.

93 Bronco

Will an e4od from a 95 van with 5.8 work in my 93 Bronco with 5.8?

Is the Bronco a 4x4? If it is, then no, a van transmission will not work.
