Transmission Confusion?
I have a 93 F350 crewcab, with a ZF S542 sitting behind a 5.8L (351W).
I am in the process of working out what to buy, regarding the transmission, since I'm about 1/3 of the way done building up an EFI 7.5L gas (460cid) engine for this truck.
Anyway, based on year I know it has the S542 with the integrated SBF bellhousing so I need to change the entire transmission, which I'm okay with.
The question(s) I have are as follows:
1. Which year did Ford change all the bellhousings? Was it right at the introduction of the "SuperDuty" trucks, or slightly before?
2. I know the gear ratios for the S542/S547 are:
1st 5.72 (Fully Synchronized)
2nd 2.94
3rd 1.61
4th 1:1
5th .76
But what are the diesel tranny gear ratios? I ask because I could use these gear ratios in the junkyard to rotate things around to estimate which transmission I am looking at.
3. Did the S640 6-sp come behind the BBF 460, or only the powerstroke? Does the powerstroke have the same bellhousing as the 460? If it did, was it consistant throughout all the years? Or switch at some point.
Thank you very much for any and all leads. I was thinking I would increase my trucks "cool" factor with a 6-sp, but if its not going to work thats entirely okay.
I was thinking briefly, I could use a 6-sp from the newer truck style behind a 5.4L, but I am not a big fan of mod motors as of late...
Thanks again
Sorry I can't be a whole lot of help, but there's a couple questions I can answer. the bellhousing did change with the Super Duties. The Trition engines have a different pattern than previous SB or BB engines. The 6 speed was never behind a gas engine until the last couple years, so it's only the 6.8L and maybe the 5.4L.
The diesel will have the same bell housing as the 460 but the ratios are not meant to be used behind a gas motor, and i also heard something about there being a problem with starter location on the diesel ZF, your best bet is to find one from behind a 460.
