Lightbulb Tranny question

Right now I am looking at doing a swap with my standard to an auto. I have found another tranny that is here close to where I live and am wondering if it will fit on my PSD. It is from an F-250 with a 460. Will everything work in conjunction with my diesel (i.e any computer controled parts that will need to be swapped). I am fairly new to the computer portion of my truck but I don't think it could be to difficult to figure out. If anyone can give me some input it is greatly appreciated.

What year/configuration is your truck and what year/configuration is the donor? I realize yours is diesel and donor is gas but 4x4 or not and year may make a difference.

The ZF 5 speed for the gas motor has different gear ratios than the ZF 5 speed for the diesel. Looking at the US Gear web site it looks like the automatics are the same for diesel and gas. As for mounting bolt pattern on the engine if you check with Ford for the part number for 460 and gas auto transmissions if they are the same it will fit. As for different years, check part number for the auto for your truck and the auto for the donor truck.

You may need to have your ECM reflashed to an automatic program as well, or use the opportunity to buy a performance chip and let the vendor know what you are doing with the truck - they should be able to burn you a chip that will do everything you want.

put another standard back in it. the trans behind a 460 is probably a e4od and from what i have heard will not bolt up and uses a different tourque converter(the psd uses a 4r100) plus you would have to change the radiator to one with a cooler in it and add another outboard cooler, then swap out your steering colum for one with a auto shifter not to mention that the ecu in the psd would have to be swaped to one for an auto trans which probably would not operate the older transmission anyhow, by this time with what you would have spent you probably could have bought another whole truck.

The PSD use both E4OD and 4R100. It's basically the same tranny but E4OD stops at 1998? and was replaced by the 4R100. Someone correct me if wrong about that.
Two best things I can tell you are- Unless this is the last truck you will ever own, don't do the swap. If you ever decide to sell it IMO it is not worth as much unless it is as it was built. If you are going to trade or sell it, keep it clean, loved, and stock.
If I were in your position I would get your 460 truck in good shape, sell it, and then go get what you want.
I don't know you personally so I don't want to offend you, but a swap like the one you are proposing can be much more involved than most owners are ready to deal with. You may be also the kind of guy that has done 3 or 4 frame-offs in the last two years. Get it built from the factory like you want it. Less worry and will work good.
wilhntr is right on about the tranny cooler. I got a 28,000 GVWR cooler and will be putting an electric fan on it.
I just ordered and installed a E4OD in my 97PSD. I got it from Phoenix transmission. They may be able to answer your questions. I had a good buying experience with them and they are happy to talk to you. To contact them go to www.phoenixhardparts.com .
I will also say that the zf5/zf6 have IMO a much better reputation than the E4OD. I think the clutch is the weak link but there are several solutions to that.
I'm not trying to talk you out of what you want to do, but just make sure that's what you want.

Thanks for the help guys and I am going to look into it and go from there. I am not to worried about how difficult it would be but I am going to look into it and see if it is something I really want to do. I am going to keep it a stock look if I do it. I think that I am going to try and find someone that can burn me a chip to make up for the ecm not being an auto and then it will work out good for me and the truck.

The diesel and the 460 have different bolt patterns. A 460 transmission will not bolt to a diesel.
