Speaker problem

I have a 2007 Screw with the premium sound system. It's always been awesome until recently. It started with a distorted driver's door speaker. I assumed it was the speaker so I replaced both front door speakers with an equivalent speaker. At first things were okay but now the distortion is back. The weird thing is that it is not consistent. Most of the time it is distorted but sometimes it is clear. I've checked all connections all the way back to the head unit. Has anyone else had similar issues? I really don't want to replace the head unit but I feel that may be the problem. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
