Hi all ,.. My 79 f150 4x4 automatic starts great and runs strong, but if I stop anywhere and turn it off it won't start again. It is completely dead, no clicking no nothing. The only thing that lights up is the red seat belt light in the dash. This has happened the last two times at the gas station. It eventually does start again after wiggling the tilt lever/blinker and shifting in and out of Park. Why is this happening ?
More than likely you need to adjust your NSS (neutral start switch).
On the '79 model it should be on the side of the transmission.
Put the transmission in neutral, loosen the two retainer screws and insert the drill (or paper clip, etc.). Once the drill bit goes all the way in, tighten the screws.
While you're under there, look for wear in the linkage, especially the little stud that attaches the shift rod to the shift arm on the trans.
