I have a '90 Aerostar with a 3.0, is there a way to retrieve computer codes with the ignition switch?--- ALSO--- It runs well but idles rough, any ideas on this? I changed the plugs but it still does it.
You should also change the wires, cap and rotor and, while you're at it, the PCV valve and air cleaner, if they haven't been done for a while. Clean the MAF sensor. There are other possibilities, but no use going there until these items are taken care of.
There is a way to retrieve codes by putting a jumper on the test connector and counting the number of times the check engine light blinks. But, if the light isn't on, you won't get any codes.
Do yourself a favor before anything else, pull off the back engine cover (the one that goes into the passenger compartment) and check the vacuum tree. I have been having idle problems for a while, and I thought my brake booster had gone. On a hunch, I followed the vacuum line back to the rear of the engine and found it loose. I pulled the cover and found 4 vacuum fittings without their mates!!! I started plugging lines back in, and I got my brake booster back, my air conditioning had only been blowing out the defroster and now functions properly, and my idle has gone from rough nearly dying to slightly rough, but there is still one fitting open that I plan to cap. Got quite a bit of power back too.
