hey there everybody. i am in need of a little advice/guidance on which tap to use before i go drilling a hole in my manifold for an EGT probe. i ordered a fitting from auber instruments that is 1/8" NPT (its tapered if that helps too). everything i've read so far (including a pdf instruction sheet from riffraff site) says to use a 1/8"-27 NPT tap. i have exactly that tap right here in front of me.
however,
when i 'measure' the threads on my fitting with the gauge here, the number 28 matches up perfectly! better than the 27.
with me i also have a 1/8"-28 BSP tap. the threads seem to match up even better than the 27 NPT.
so my question is, which do i use? does it really matter at this point b/c i'll be torquing the fitting into the manifold anyway?
heres a pic to help. thanks in advance for the help! i know you guys won't steer me wrong. thats why i'm finally posting this.
Go with the 27. The way I look at is Riff raff has more first hand knowledge in that area. just my .02
Side note,,,see you nailed the picture attachment.
hey there. i thought i would share my progress of some gauge installations on the 'ole GREAT (snow) white. i've mentioned before i don't live in the greatest of areas and my parking spot isn't' that much better as i've been stolen from twice now.. its tough to find a block of time to get a full project done so i've been picking away at this for the past few weeks now. i keep singing that johnny cash song, something to the effect of "…i built it one piece at a time…"
thats how i feel here. just able to do one small thing at a time.
i'll let you know if i screw anything up along the way. but for now, so far, so good. cheers!
my parking/garage spot
another view of my sometimes sketchy parking lot
holes drilled, getting ready to tap
then the sun reflects off that wall of windows. shines right in my field of view
probe is hard-mounted
wire thru firewall as per riffraff instructions awesome tip. just awesome!
oh yea. to answer your question i went with the 1/8"-27 NPT. i read the BSP tap would work HOWEVER it would not allow the threads to 'seal' properly. i did a couple practice runs on the inside of the tailgate and it went well.
so i finally finished the auber instrument gauge installation. one on top for fuel pressure and the bottom for EGT. setting up the gauge for PSI was a little tricky but its working good now…
