I parked my 2003 f150 about 8wks ago, and at that time the blower had been running only on high then not at all, then only on high again.
As I need it to pull the boat up north next week, I purchased and changed the resistor.
When I started it up the blower motor wouldn't run and eventually it started to smoke, so I pulled the wire connecter to the motor.
I was wondering if anyone here would know where I can find a procedure for motor testing, and removal as I think this is probably where I'm headed with this.
There seems to be utube videos on everything else but not this. I may just have to go out and purchase a Hains or Chilton manual but I'm Scottish and always look for the free route first.
Thanks ahead of time to anyone who can point me in the right direction.
Your previous symptoms strongly suggested the issue was just the resistor network having failed. A blower motor not running but starting to smoke says its the motor itself.
You could run a hot wire directly to the blower motor connection or remove it from its housing and turn it by hand. Chances are either test will reveal a locked motor, replacing it the only real option.
Yes I replaced the motor and the new resistor is now not working, only blows on high again. I may have blown it by putting it up against a motor that wouldn't spin.
I'll try to take it back Monday.
That's also possible but check your dash mounted speed control switch too---those have been known to almost spontaneously overheat and nearly melt, also causing loss of speed selection.
Thanks for the heads up on the control switch, If the next resistor doesn't fix the problem I will go back to the truck in the wrecking yard that donated the new blower motor for the switch as well.
Those switches are available new for $20 or less through NAPA. IF that switch has been melted consider also replacing the connector, also available through NAPA.
Cheaper versions are available naturally so pick your price and be cool!
Hey JWA the new resistor has solved all my problems and now everything is back to normal.
Thanks for the insight as two heads are always better than one.
