Wrench light while towing

Wrench light while towing

I was pulling my trailer up a fairly long hill, watching the ect got up around 210 and heard the fan come on. The eot was around 225 and I lost all boost threw the wrench light. Without the trailer in the summer the temps are around eot 200 ect 190.Wondering if the oil cooler is plugging up? 2007 6.0

The 15* delta probably set the CEL (since you have a 2007), but during towing the delta varies widely based on grade, wind, outdoor temp, etc.. so it's not a real way to determine IF your oil cooler is clogged.

The typical method is with engine up to temp (190) and to drive 65-ish on reasonable FLAT (NOT towing) interstate for 15 minutes or so watching the temps..

The standard for an oil cooler wrench light is more or less 25 degrees.

Need to pull codes as it could be FICM voltage or a boost issue too.

Bet you a 12 pack it's your turbo. Classic towing an incline, wrench light and limp mode. Pull over, turn engine off, restart and it's like nothing had happened.

I would agree. Pull codes and I bet there will be an over boost code. Probably time to clean it if that's the case.

It won't set a code if the wrench light comes on, just happened to me. Probably stuck turbo vanes.

The wrench light is supposed to set unique codes for the issue. Likely need a very high quality scanner, AE or IDS to get it.

Scangauge definitely won't pull those codes.

Thanks for the input guys,I will get the code read nothing on the scan gauge . Just for info why does the turbo seem to work good without towing?

Putting a load on it makes the turbo work harder. If there is some coking or rust on the unison ring or veins would be more likely to stick open and cause an overboost. I am sure if you were unloaded and wot up a hill would probably do the same thing.

I agree, had the same experience. My truck had a P0299 code along with the wrench light...

I have had the same problem. Typically it occurs towing my car hauler with the cruise control on and I forget to turn off CC as I start up a grade. The tranny downshifts at least 2 gears increasing the revs and then the wrench light comes on.

Randy, you're almost certainly going to need to pull the turbo and see if it just needs cleaning or needs a new turbo. You should have been able to see the boost going high fast just after it down-shifted, it will de-fuel and set the wrench light at around 32 lbs of boost, or so they say.

You can see from my sig line that I put in a new Rotomaster turbo. My OEM turbo was heavily corroded, the Rotomaster was $995, brand new, made in Canada, no core charge.
