How do you know when your fuel pump is starting to go bad?
Today I took a 40 mile ride to Philadelphia in my 85' F350 w/7.5L. Everything was ok on the ride up. When I started headed back , I was driving on the highway at 55mph, then my truck started puttering. I slowly started losing speed so I pulled over. The truck was idling fine, and would rev up fine when I gave it gas. So I tried to take off again. Everything was ok for 4-5 miles, then it did it again. After pulling over a 2nd time, I turned the truck off & restarted it. Everything seemed fine, so I took off. After 4-5 miles it started again. Each time it puttered, there was a funny smell like my fuel/air mixture wasn't right (my guess)
I realized that if I didn't keep my foot on the gas constantly, it wouldn't do it. So I would accelerate up to 45mph, than coast to 40mph, than accel to 45mph, then coast to 40mph, etc. This worked and got me home. Any ideas? How do you know if your fuel pump is still working, but starting to fail? Is there a way to test it? What about a clogged fuel filter
The filter is the cheapest, easiest option. So first thing in the morning, I will change it. Appreciate everybody's input. I'll give you an update in the A.M.
RalfZ, that's my 2nd guess. Does a fuel pump slowly go bad? Or does it work, than stop working right away?
Just another thought!!!
My carbi has a filter in the body of it a little cone pre filter, and it was gummed up. It's a rochester quadra jet.
Pretty common here in Australia for lpg powered trucks.
The truck idles fine and light throttle it's fine. But during acceleration or under load, like going up a hill, it stumbles, like running out of fuel. If I switch to the saddle tank it picks up and runs fine. That makes me think the pump is dying.
Do you have dual tanks so you can try a similar experiment to isolate the problem?
The pump came saturday but it won't be until weekend after this before I can change it. I'll post the results.
