has the injector pump ever been changed?
life expectancy of the injector pump is around 125-150k miles.

When it loses it's prime, is the fuel filter full? If it's not full, you've got air intrusion. What do you have to do to prime it? The fact that it starts OK sometimes tells me that the Injection Pump is OK. The OE fuel pump has 2 valves in it that will not let the fuel backflow into the tank. If my wife were leaving on a trip with that vehicle, I would install an Electric Fuel Pump to make sure that she could easily start it. An EP saves the starter because it will start pumping as soon as you energize it. I've changed my filter and just left my EP on for 20 to 30 minutes. It purges all of the air out and it starts immediately. The purists on here will yelp about it being a band aid and the problem found and fixed. Sometimes it's better to get running now especially if the better half is going to be driving the truck on a trip.

The lift pump is just a basic diaphram pump, the diaphram moves up and down moving the fuel with it and two check valves allow it to suck fuel from the tank and into the chamber on the downstroke and push it out and up to the inj pump on the upstroke. Those check valves "should" prevent fuel from flowing back into the tank when the engine isnt running. The check valves are in the lift pump, not the inj pump.

the check valves in the lift pump may help stop fuel draining back to the tank but you'd still have to have an air leak upstream for it to allow drain back. If your filter had air in it you have air leaking into the fuel system from somewhere.

Update

Well think found the fuel problem, I tink it was my starter being the problem not spinning over fast enough went to the store today and came out and didn't spin over at all had truck tow home ( think god for AAA ) did some testing batterys are and was load testing good had 13.5 v in both so took the meter and work my way back to the start had 12v all way to starter then put amp meter on it bingo. So got me to thinking truck wasn't spinning over fast enough so my think was LP couldn't keep up with the fuel and the IP was suck all the full out filter. so fine out here with in next few days here been banging head up against a wall looking for fuel leak or place it may have been sucking air

What you guys think sound about right

Other update

Well it wasn't the starter it had air in the system again. but i think i made have found the problem the last cap on driver side was leaking couldn't see just looking at it in till i on top of the motor and could see fuel setting on the back of the block. Looks like when put the return lines on that pinch one of the O-Rings so put 2 new O-Rings on so i hope this fix my problem and think the starter was also part of the problem The truck sure does spin over lot faster

Thanks guys for all the help
