It could be a chewed wire, indeed. Both codes essentially mean the same thing, injector #5, high to low side open. The injectors are electrically controlled by a solenoid, so an injector code like that only refers to the electrical side of the injector. I'd start checking the wiring harnesses beginning with the underside of the 42 pin connector harness where it crosses over the left valve cover. That's a known spot for chafing. Also check any areas that look like they may have been chewed by rodents. Repair any bare spots you find. If everything looks good physically, you can also check the resistance of the wiring through the injector solenoid from that 42 pin connector.
It would probably be more like "less-go", unless for some reason the injector driver module reacted to the fault by taking the entire cylinder bank offline to protect itself. When it happened, was it a somewhat subtle misfire, or a, "holy crap, there's something seriously wrong and I think the engine is going to come out through the hood", type of shaking and rumbling?
I just lost power, like could only go about 20-30mph....I literally went in and got feed, left my truck running and come back out and it was like it was missing....no power when I took off, etc
It should have more power than that if only one injector isn't firing. Power would be reduced for sure, but I wouldn't think it would be as bad as that. Did your guy find any chafed wires?
Not yet....he said that he had to take a bunch from on top apart to get down into it to see so I just left my truck with him.....sounded like a big job to check wires but I really don't know?
It could take a couple hours or so to check it all the way to the IDM, which is not-so-conveniently mounted inside the left fender up behind the plastic liner.
That was how my truck acted when the injector poppet screw got loose. Truck had no power and would barely make it home. Test showed circuit open because the injector coil could not pull up the poppet valve. If the wiring checks out I would look at the injector below the coil.
