Off the intake spider, the hot side boot has a dirt and oily film while the cold side boot does not. The hot side boot is the only spot that I could find this.
Has anyone seen this and have an idea what could be causing this?
That is normal. The crank case has a vent, aptly named, the Crank Case Vent (CCV). See where it goes from the drivers side of the engine into the intake tube?
It vents pressure there, and with it goes some oil residue. Not detrimental to your engine. Minute amounts accumulate in the intercooler. I'm talking a few milliliters. (I'm going to pay for that, I just use the metric system at work so its easier for me.) Some people do a mod, also very appropriately named, the CCV mod.

If the CCV mod is done and it is not routed back into the intake, then it is from the turbo passing oil beyond the seal. How many miles are on the turbo?

Yes, I have done the CCV mod with Catchcan and routed back into intake. All the hose connections have clamps, so maybe I should check to see if residue is slipping past the connections?

Odometer is just under 125,000. I'm the 4th owner. Don't know if it is the original turbo.

Okay, now that I know you have a catch can and it is re-routed back to the intake, I have a slightly different input.
I ran a catch can and routed back to intake for around 10K miles. For the life of me I could not figure out why I still had oil in the IC piping. Come to find out, the catch can wasn't working too well. I vented to atmosphere and all oil went away. This is with a brand new GTP38R too, btw.
So... depending on which catch can you are using, that may be the issue. I ran the TSC strainer with no additional filter besides the mesh screen it comes with. Maybe if you put more filtering material in there it would work better, but I can't say for sure.
As a conclusion, vent to atmosphere for a while and see if the oil comes back. If it does, it is for sure a turbo seal. If not, it was just that the catch can wasn't doing it's job.

When I did the defoil mod last year; and, when the hot side boot on the IC blew off 6 months ago, I was wondering why there was oil in the CAC boots and hot side tube. Thanks Justin, I will try venting to atmosphere for a while. Appreciate the advice.
