OK, so when I go to remove this bad boy what should I do here? Bring it to TDC and.........................? I assembled a 6.9 from a long block all the way to running about 16 years ago and I can't remember what I did to install the pump on that one. I do remember that once it was on I didn't have to remove it and re-set anything. I just purged the lines and fired it up.
As long as you don't remove the timing gear cover, you don't even need to bring it to TDC. There is an access cover on the front of the timing gear housing or on the older 6.9's remove the oil filler tube to access the bolts that hold the pump to the gear. With the timing gear housing intact, the timing gear can not disengage to disrupt timing. On re-installation there is a dowel in the gear which the pump fits on to insure proper placement.
That's likely why I got the 6.9 together correctly. I installed all the timing gears with the dots lined up I assume and then the pump only goes on one way. Who do you use to rebuild pumps and injectors?
You are correct on the timing marks on the gears. If they are all aligned, your timing is in sync, and there is only minimal timing adjustment with the pump bolts to dial it in. As far as pumps and injectors go there are many companies out there who do rebuilds with core exchanges, there is much debate on the quality of product you get with them. You can try a local re-builder, but not many of them know a lot about our pumps anymore, or for a little extra coin you can go with a performance pump from R&D.
Im happy with my r&d idi pump thus far. Picked up some mpgs too although i dont ave numbers yet ( will soon). The alignment pin on gear allows it to only go back on one way when gear and housing is not removed.
Hey Brokeasajoke, what was the skinny on your pump? Is your engine stock, meaning cam and all? Turbo? The mileage is pretty important to me. Our truck always got 17-22 mpg. Since we put the sidewinder on it the mileage dropped a lot, though they say it should get better..
