Smile Timing the Injection pump

I'm probably going to end up replacing the IP in the near futur and thought while I'm at it I would see about changing the timing on it for better performance, but I am not sure of how to go about doing that. Also what type/brand of injectors deliver best performance for a non turbo 6.9?

when you remove the old pump DO NOT remove the gear cover. the pump will come off by marking and removing the electrical wires, loosen all injector lines from the injectors, remove the 3 nuts holding the pump to the mounting plate, remove the oil fill cover - inside there are 3 5/16 12 pt bolts to be removed (and dont drop one into the cover). The whole unit will come off in one assembly. You will notice on the pump drive that there is a notch to aid in reassembly and timing. Remove the fuel lines from old pump, put on new pump and put er back together leaving the fuel lines at injectors loose til you get fuel flow to the injectors. On the mounting bezel there are stake marks on the top driver side of the flange, they will be lined up at reassembly. Advancing timing will move the top of the pump toward passenger side, no more than the width of those timing marks. In other words, the timing marks will still be touching each other. DONT work the starter too long at any one time allowing it to cool down for a couple minutes between cranks.

the diesels are not speed deamons. when you adjust the timing, do it with the engine off.
