Been noticing that I seem to be running a little fast compared to other traffic around town.
So I took the truck on the Interstate to compare odometer to mile markers.
Basically for each real mile of travel, my odometer is reporting about .85 or close.
So is a close approximation essentially speed plus 15 percent? If that is the case my MPGs shows to be about 11.
Of course would like to correct it, but not a pressing matter. most of the driving is below 30-45 mph around town, so easily adjusted for. I thinking the correction is changing out the speedo gear in the tranny.
the gear on the end of the cable transmission side comes in 5 different versions to adjust the speedometer. I believe they are all still available from Ford. They will have more or less teeth. pull what you have to see witch way you need to go.

Approx. 5-7 MPH difference for each of these gears. If the truck has P-Metric radials, the speedo will never read correctly.
2X Bill. The nylon gears are color coded. Different gears for Manual trans or Automatic. Less teeth than what you have now will speed up the speedometer. A present tooth count and a pic of your old one will make it the easiest on either Bill or myself to give you the part number for the gear you need.
Next time I am in a position to pull the speedometer gear, I will. I am guessing it is pretty simple process on my tranny.
I will try this weekend, unless it is something I can do without lifting the truck (don't have my jacks and jack stands at my house) in my driveway.
Then I might try to get to it earlier - while I am cussing at trying to get some semblance of a functioning fuel gauge.

Oh yeah. Crawl under there on a Kreeper. Where the speedo cable goes in the L/R of the tranny is what you want to remove. The speedo gear will be on the end of it.
Yellow gear is 18 tooth manual trans. 18 X .85 = 15.3. Lowest number teeth gear Ford makes (still) is 16. 16 tooth M/T gear is part number CODZ17271A. color coded:wine.
Thanks.
Ford house will have me one this week. Jeez NOSparts had it for $45 plus shipping. Good grief. About $5 everywhere else including my dealership.
Finally installed the replacement speedometer gear.
Using the mile markers on the interstate I was showing right at .95 to 1 mile. Pretty darn close.
Thanks for the help here.
