Hello all, first 4 wheel drive ever for me. Yes I am new. I bought a 99 f250 super a few days ago. It already has the warn locks on it but they will not lock and turn the front wheels. I turn the switch to 4x4 high and I hear it kick in, the light on the dash comes on. So I unbolted the six bolts on both front hubs and pull out the warn locks and gears, jack up the rear, start the truck, put it in gear and I can see the axles spin. Put it back together and still nothing. What is my next step?
Ok since the electric tcase motor is working and engaging the tcase and you checked and the front axle is turning now its time to take the warn hubs apart. When you remove the chrome cap and look at it there is a three finger engage thing. (Dont know exact name) there is a circle clip that keeps everything together remove the clip and degrease all the parts and only apply a super thin layer to the contact points. The only time I ever seen a warn hub fail is because the person packed the dial with grease and it stopped the spring from pushing on the three finger hub that engages the inner hub spline
Just making sure you realize the Warn hubs are manual locking hubs, thus the ESOF system (via vacuum) will not lock the hubs for you. The ESOF switch just controls the Tcase.

Meaning, that you have to turn the hubs to the lock position manually. Only the OEM Ford hubs work automatically---ALL aftermarket hubs have to be engaged manually.
Yes I realize the switch on the dash only works the transfer case now that it has warn hubs. Mine do not have "three fingers" in it, not sure how to describe what it looks like. And yes I did turn to the lock position and still get nothing. I took the caps or locking parts off and then there is a gear that is held in by a screw. All the screw does is hold the gear in against the spring so you can put the caps on. The caps seem to be working. It seems like the gear is not going in or in far enough. I dont get it. I guess I will have to dig in deeper and see what is in there and the clean off old grease and re grease them with a thin coat like superdutyscaler says. One side seems like it has more grease than the other.
Heres another thing to try, remove the dial jack up the front axle, with the hub off push the gear in so it engages the front axle shaft, turn the wheel with your hand it should now be engaged and turn the front axle and driveshaft. If not someone stripped the splines
I have all my tools at my shop so I cant take any pics for you but it seems like if you see that much grease then there is WAY TOO MUCH remember only a super thin layer
