If by "black" you mean the insulating sleeve that covers the wire, yes, that one goes to the oil pressure sender.
The color codes are:
Red w/ green stripe = + side of coil (has yellow 90° terminal)
Red w/ white stripe = water temp sender
White w/ red stripe = oil pressure sender (has woven black heat insulator)

We have combustion...but not idle

I finally installed the gauge feed harness and re-stabbed the distributor at TDC to get the timing close. IT"S ALIVE!

As you can hear in the video below, it will start right up but will not idle, it will run as long as you are revving it, if you stop it dies. The carb is newly rebuilt from Autoline and is suppose to be test run and set to factory specs. I don't have the choke tubes purchased/installed.

What do you think? Choke issue or idle screw adjustment?

Double check your firing order.

Is the 302 stock? The reason I ask is the 302HO has a different firing order 1 - 3 - 7 - 2 - 6 - 5 - 4 - 8.
Another thing, without rereading the whole thread, did you run a compression test?

I believe it to be a stock 302, no I haven't done a compression test.

Is the choke open or closed? If it's open, try adjusting it so it's closed, set it a little "tight" and se what happens.
If the choke opens and the engine dies, try using your finger to keep the choke plate closed or close to closed and try starting it again.

Have you check for vacuum leaks, not just around the carb, intake and vacuum lines but also the PCV valve and brake booster. If you have factory A/C the control panel can also cause vacuum leaks (it has 2 vacuum valves).

I thought that the choke being closed after it ran for a few minutes was a bad thing and might be starving the engine of air?

I replaced the carb gasket yesterday. I can find no more obvious vacuum leaks, although the "vacuum tree" behind the EGR valve looks suspect, screws in hoses, capped lines, its a mess.

I am thinking about pulling the EGR this weekend and cleaning it with some carb cleaner then capping the unused vacuum ports?

EGR

So....here's what I found when I pulled the EGR?

I am going to attempt to clean it, from the looks of the sticker on the back its the original.

What about the intake manifold? The port that is clogged feels full when I put my finger in it. Can I safely just unclog it with a screwdriver or do I need to pull the manifold?

FIRE IN THE HOLE!

I cleaned the EGR and re-installed it with a new gasket, the diaphragm seems to be operational. I capped all the ports on the vacuum tree with new plugs and I found what looks like an PCV valve attached directly to the rear of the intake manifold? I capped both ports on it also.

It starts right up, but is doing the same thing, revving but not idling. Then it backfires (flamethrower) out of the rear of the carb, I believe the carb base gasket is blown. The thin paperish one that came with the rebuilt carb blow out awhile ago and I replaced it with the PO's felpro (thicker and purple). I am going to get a new gasket and try again.
