I heard some squeaking and replaced the front left U-Joint by the steering knuckle. When I put the axle back in, I thought it was in, but pushed a little more to make sure it was in the differential (it did go in a tiny bit more). Anyways, I'm pretty sure I put the locking hubs back together right. I put the keyed washer in to the nipple on the locking nut. Everything torqued with a new wrench to specs. I just can't get the small snap ring on the axle. Is there a chance I put the axle in too far?
Any ideas would be appreciated.
I drove her around the block fine. The play I had in the axle is completely gone (which I think is because there was only a tiny remnant of what was an axleshaft seal between it and the spindle).
I once put on two of the little plastic washer deals that sit behind the spindle bearing, that effectively shimmed the stub inboard, and couldn't get the small snap ring on.
Otherwise, try prying outward on the stub shaft at the U-joint. I've had to do that to get the small snap ring on the axle before. The snap ring isn't critical on the left side, but it always seems strange to have "left over" parts.
