From what I've read about MPG from people on here. It doesn't matter if you have a 302,351,360,390,400 or 460. They all get about the same. This whole world's going to hell in a hand basket. Just fill the tank and enjoy it.
I'm not naive enough to think my truck is going to have good fuel economy at 6,500# with 4.10's.
Been following the fuel mileage thread and believe you can get 18 in real driving conditions if you just put along in a optimized F150.
Sad thing is most of the newer trucks barely get 15. My brother has an 08 F150. Crew cab. 5.4. 11-12 city, 14 highway. I have a bigger engine, weigh less than him and I'm not that far behind for a 22 year difference. It's pretty sad. Oil companies run the world..
I don't think it's a conspiracy.
The little 2015 ecoboost isn't getting better mileage than David's 30 year old I-6.
Piston ICE's are just horribly inefficient.
They gotta make money somehow. Combine the new trucks getting slightly better MPG, with the added cost of parts, higher insurance and a lot more stuff to go wrong. They're behind us with the old trucks. My brothers truck weighs 5800 pounds with both of us in it. And neither of us weigh a whole lot. My truck weighs 4480 with 2 tanks of gas half full and all 190 pounds of me in it... Did the same thing with a 2010 F150, except extended cab. 5,700 pounds.
This an interesting topic as far as mpg goes. I would like to see some people tell their stories about mileage between the two engines.
I have read posts about people with 460's getting decent economy and people 351 W's getting terrible fuel economy. Then of course vise versa.
Okay - well my stock 351W (139HP) was getting around 12mpg. My 460 build (450HP) gets 5 mpg.
However the comparison is faulty - my 460 was not built for economy.
I used get 10.
Maybe a little better on the highway and a little worse around town.
Best mileage ever, 13.7 with the camper in the bed on the way back from SC in '95.
Worst mileage (including LOT'S of idling) 5 something during the blizzard of '96.
I played taxi when people couldn't get their stupid *** home in 30+" of snow.
All 4X4, tire spinning, crawling, pushing and plenty of low gear.
My truck was a beast back then.
I think the 351HO has potential for better economy than the 460, but not by much in a heavy truck.
The 460 is definitely more powerful as the two came ff the lot side by side.
This another issue called under powered. I have had trucks with V6 motors in them and they actually get worse mileage than a V8. The mileage really goes down of you work them. So I can see a BB could do just as well as a SB especially in a truck.
Same thing as running a horribly underpowered engine and then de smog it and run a normal cam, carb etc. Drive it the same, MPG will be different. The more underpowered an engine is, the farther down your foot goes. And the more gas that sucks down.
Okay - well my stock 351W (139HP) was getting around 12mpg. My 460 build (450HP) gets 5 mpg.

My 351 was getting 7, also not built for economy though.
My 444 powerstroke gets 14-15 wherever and pulling a trailer too. Fuel is more expensive than unleaded as well, but does its job well. It's a trade out. The oil companies have it down to where you will pay so much on the average to travel about.
7 miles per gallon equals 14.3 gallons of gasoline used. At 3.00 per gallon a 100 mile trip will cost you $42.90
14 miles per gallon equals 7 gallons of diesel used. At 3.50 per gallon, a 100 mile trip will cost you $24.50.
Say your gas truck got 12mpg. 100 mile trip would mean 8.3 gallons of gas used and would cost you $24.90. That's pretty close to the diesel cost. So unless your gas truck gets within 2 mpg of the diesel, the diesel will win, even though the fuel in more expensive.
