I just replaced the power steering pump on my 70 f100 and was wondering how to bleed the air out. I was also told to use power steering fluid instead of atf. so what kind of fluid do I use.
If it's a fresh system I prefer NEO power steering fluid used in race cars, has anti-foam, wear and varnish additives. It has higher lubrication properties than ATF. If ATF were a lubericant the clutches in an auto trans would slip. Also add a large cooler not Ford's little joke of a loop.

I did a swap to a saginaw and filled mine new pump, started the truck, and had a little graoning, and was hard to steer. I drove around teh neighborhood and checked the fluid level every so often. I all quit after about fifteen minutes or so. If it does not go away make sure your lines are right and not clogged.
To bleed just about any power steering system, raise the front wheels on jackstands (remember you are turning the wheels - so place properly), take the ps. cap off, start engine, turn slowly left to right, right to left, without hitting the steering stops.
