My 86 F350 6.9 was switched from the firewall filter/heater/separator and I have to come up with something to suffice. I bougth a new filter and a metal tire stem with gasket. My plans are to drill a hole the size of the tire stem in the bottom and seat it it with fuel safe silicon to giev me a port to check/drain water. Thoughts?
You need a special filter to get the water out or else it will just flow through.
get a fuel filter/water separator from the bone yard for a 2003 or earlier chevy 6.6. it uses standard rubber lines and the bracket that holds the assembly should be easy to adapt to your firewall. there must have been a problem with those 86's mine was removed and the lines connected together to. I since sold that truck, I like the 7.3 PSD.
Have you looked around? A quick search on ebay yields all kinds of options:

Are just a few....
I have several options once I get to Pennsylvania just not enough time now while getting ready, to install anything requiring more than a few minutes. But thanks!
most filters are ten micron, and wont pass water (2-4lbs pressure ) they just stop flowing. you are on the right track. the factory system is or was set up with a metered, return line exiting the filterhead, this is to remove tiny air bubbles from fuel slosh in the tank, (factory filter was post lift pump) so, ware you mount the filter may be a factor. if the only return line you have is the one, on the top of the IP, All air (from slosh) in the system must pass through the transfer pump and can make the engine surge
