Looking to reinstall a water separator back and the 6.9. Original separator is still mounted under the brake booster but has been bypassed, are there any diagrams or pictures on the hose routing to these things? I'm looking to buy an aftermarket separator but basically mount it in the same area
PO put a Racor unit in my '86 at the stock location. I haven't studied it so I do not know if this is it, but it's similar at least:

As far as plumbing I do not believe it's anything special, just in-line with the fuel line. If the old one is bypasses it should be as simple as un-coupling the hoses and hook them up to the new unit.
So when I did that quick search on ebay for that one I see some other interesting units:
Looks like this guy has a built in primer bulb, which could be useful:

This one has it's own fuel heater:

Hmmm, no shortage of options.
Thanks Chevy, I was that Tractor Supply this morning as well kind of looking around at some separator options. I'll have to crawl under the hood today and see exactly how it was bypassed even though I just 're adjusted the fuel screw and read timed it yesterday lol
i would look for a 7.3 filter assembly and put that on leaving the stock setup bypassed. the 7.3 filter has the water separator under it, and the aftermarket one piece filter design from napa and wix has the water drain in the bottom of the filter.

True I forgot about that route as well, I'll probably have to hit up eBay or something simply because I don't have a junkyards here in susanville that have a lot of diesel stuff
About a year ago I installed a new water separator. My truck previously had a Racor unit from the 80's that was letting a lot of air into the system. I did some research and ordered the Stanadyne FM100 system (ordered from thedieselstore.com). It seemed a bit cheaper than the equivalent Racor units. I should note that it uses push-on filters as opposed to the standard spin on kind.
I'm not out to say that this system is better than a Racor system or even going the route of the 7.3 setup, however, I'm just posting it so you can see that there are different options out there. I've been happy with my system.
Yes, the filter itself is push on, and the plastic ring around the top of the filter screws onto the housing to hold the filter on. It's an interesting design.
And was thinking about getting it with the exception of, the inlet and outlet ports are 1 inch lol. I like the setup but that is an awful lot of reducers to get it down to our fuel line size

One of my dad's tractors has that design, probably takes the same filter. It's a John Deere 6300. The ring has come loose a couple times and the filter falls off.
Here is a look at my separator mod. The center control rod (sealed drain controller) was removed completely, with the exception of the upper nut. The lower hose is run down the wheel well area and is plugged with a bolt and hose clamp.
I plugged the upper nut with an inexpensive weld all rod and drilled and tapped to fit a barbed fitting, although barbed fittings usually have a nut at the threaded area. Maybe it is nothing more than a threaded union, sorry I do not remember.
I installed a clear filter and applied vacuum until filled to prime the line. The fuel in the filter, I think, will indicate that the fuel line has not gone empty due to air intrusion. Plus, this gives me a filtered port to tap from if I ever need fuel in the future. If I need to drain the separator, I can apply vacuum to this tap to prime my lines.
Hi I just bought an 86 idi and my fuel water separator is giving me problems. I really like your separator setup you're running on your idi I had a couple questions about it. Would you mind texting or emailing me? 650-455-4851 coryradov@gmail.com thanks a lot! -Cory Radov
