I was at an RV meeting this weekend and spoke to a guy about my E4OD problem.
He claimed, that the TCC is also active in third gear, so when it is really gone I should notice it also when driving in third gear... Is this true?
He also advised to change the ATF, as we found out that I have used ATF according to spec Dexron III+H / Mercon. He said to change over to Mercon V and he would not wonder when all problems would disappear....
What do you think?
Thanks in advance.

Yes it does lock in third. Slipping doesn't always show up in third. Lower gear so the clutch isn't under a severe load.
I wouldn't wait until it slips in third to replace the converter. At that point you can kill the tranny.
if i found out my tccs was bad, then i would simply try a new solenoid pack first.how did this get checked? and if the tssc was diagnosed as bad, then how did they lock the converter up to test it's clutch?
id also want to know why the fluid burnt inside 3k miles though.lockup or not,it shouldn't get "that" hot unless you were towing, loaded heavy with no aux cooler at all? i could see that warming things up quick without lockup and burning the fluid.
converter lockup should occur just after the trans shifts into 3rd gear at approx 35 mph under light/moderate load.
Workshop had a tester which ran some testing cycles, while I had to switch engine on and off several times. The mechanic said, the tester tried to engage TCC, but the valve/solenoid did not react....
No towing so far. But can the ATF burn after just 3k miles due to wrong spec?
running mercon in place of mercon 5 is not the reason for the fluid burning up inside 3k miles no.mercon is "ok" to use but 5 is much better, that's why ford dropped it.running the old mercon isn't the issue.$4500 is more than likely a much stronger E40D build than the idi would benefit from, but it's your coin.that $ should buy an E40D/4R100 build to hold up to a heavy modded 2nd gen psd, include install and a very nice warranty.....well no should,i know it does lol.keep shopping.
this is a short update and also a new question from me.
Have installed a new TPS and solenoid pack together with new trans filter and also changed the trans fluid including draining the torque converter. The ATF looked like this:
Afterwards I could not recognize my motorhome again, it accelerated better than before and the hard shift into overdrive disappeared. But now I sometimes have a slipping / crunching noise when it locks up in third. This does not happen when it is under full load. Also, when it is cold the trans is a bit reluctant in downshifting when braking. Once it is warm no problems with downshifting.
Could this related to the torque converter only?
We took our motorhome on vacation to Sweden and drove it nearly 2500 km after changing TPS and fluid. Still the fluid is bright red and clear so I still hope I would not need to rebuild the complete transmission.
yeah that's horrible.you've got to unhook the cooler line at the rear of the trans.start the truck and see how fast it's pumping out.your cooler/s are probably plugged up.the damage from running her so hot is more than likely irreversible.
be sure to install a trans temp gauge with sender @ the test port when you get a reman/used replacement.might as well run this for all shes worth.......with first making sure the fluid is flowing through the coolers before shelling out the big bucks.you could go years still depending on condition/miles you use it.
it was pumping out the front line.was it also returning to the rear line at the trans? i use auto meter electrical gauges with sending unit at test port.
