Can you take out the extention houseing on the truck ?
Or Do you have to take the transmission out and take it all apart ?
Trans came from a 87 with 4x4
By extension housing... do you mean the back half of the transmission case?
Basically... you're screwed. Transmission has to come out.
When you disassemble a ZF5 the last thing you're left with is the back half of the case. Literally, the front half comes off and all the shafts are installed into the back half.
Best best is either see if you can get it welded, or get a new transmission.

yep^ you can get a new back half, but, then you have to potentially change preload shims and buy a small parts kit to re-install the detent plugs for the shift rails. for the cost of a new back half you could probably pick up a used trans. Best bet is to get it welded. where did it break?
Just curious would this be a transmission shop job if I wanted to get the work done to change the part.
Or someone with basic mechanical skills can tackle this job like myself?
Thanks for your quick replys
Well, it depends on how confident you are. my ZF-5 was the first trans I had ever taken apart completely and reassembled myself. new bearings, shim kit, measured preload, etc. attention to detail is much more pertinent than mechanical skill in this case. If you wanna tackle the job yourself go for it. trans shop will charge you a fortune. If I had all the parts in front of me It could be rebuilt in a day. I had mine down to mainshafts and all other parts in baggies. ppl make it sound much more difficult than it is. attention to detail covers it all. pick up a good dial indicator and a shim kit for the main shaft and counter shaft. It may take a few tries to get it perfect but peace of mind means a lot to me on an investment. make it last. Look up a few rebuild threads, if you feel like its something you can do I'm sure a few here would lend some advice. I have a thread on here somewhere with my own issues, been into the trans more than i care to talk about lol.
