I am leaking Tranny fluid and I need to drop the the trans and replace the seals. How much of a pain in the butt is this gonna be??? I have a 94 non turbo 2wd e40d.
That's reassuring, Thanks for the link for the seal!! I think I read that this seal will stop fluid from spewing out when it's hot. Does that sound correct? Do I need a Viton for the rear also or will an over the counter from advance work?

yeah but i'll wait until your done before telling you i was being sarcastic.
in my log truck thread, you can see what a difficult time i had when my trans seal blew and what the issue was.
tip: if you discover the bushing has walked inside the pump all you need to do is get on ebay and find a reman F5 front e40d pump.replace it and be done.i didn't go that route, due to learning & upgrades.if your not into that,a reman f5 and done.
you don't even need to upgrade to the f5 if you dont want.simply find a reman e9 for even less $ and be done.either way if required though,be sure to post.you don't want to replace it without the proper instructions and parts.
so basically, pull the trans and remove the converter.
remove the front seal and look in.if you see the bushing (where the converter hub slides into) looks even, then just replace the seal and put it back together.done.
if you see the bushing is sticking up towards you/no longer even with the aluminum.stop! post back for details on what to buy and how to replace it.
the rear doesn't get hot and have any issues that im aware of,and besides that, that one is extremely easy to fix.drop the drive shaft and there it is.
If you are gonna do the job on your back with the truck up on jack stands, do yourself a favor and get the trans adaptor from Harbor Freight. It goes on your floor jack in place of the pad and turns it into a trans jack. The E4OD is *very* heavy so you don't want it dropping off the jack.

Thanks, will do! I've got a broke hand now, I don't need another injury.

Okay so I have found that mY bushing has walked. Trans mechanic in town says new transmission... sounds like he just wants my 2700 bucks... He did mention something about how a 1993 e4od was considerably weaker than others and that he would need to upgrade parts. I work on my own stuff but that sounds out of my realm of knowledge here. I’m going to try to get a new pump online. Could you give me some pointers on what I need to do to ensure I put this puppy back together properly? Also could I run a F9 in this early model? I Made the mistake of just replacing the steel and stuff in the trans back under the truck only to find it was still leaking made the mistake of just replacing the steel and stuff in the trans back under the truck only to find it was still leaking#Facepalm. Thanks in advance.

Use a F5 pump. Its a direct swap for early the E9 pump.

He happens to know what he's talking about, but do what you want. I'm no auto trans mechanic but I know for a fact these trans had a high failure rate. Back in the day I knew LOTS of friends and strangers that had E40D breakdowns. And these were conservative guys who didn't abuse their pickups. I remember dropping off a friend at a local trans shop to pickup his truck after a trans overhaul and the shop owner said see you in another 60,000 miles (for his next trans O.H.) Good part is, I understand there is upgraded parts nowadays, there wasn't back then.
