i have a 78 bronco with the 351,C6.Np203 drive train. my tansmission is leaking between the engine and tranny where it bolts together, what gasket it that, and how much would it take to fix at a shop if anyones had it done before. i work at a gas station/garage but we dont have the equipment to drop the tranny. my boss said it would take 5 or 6 hours probly. so im gueesin probly 400 bucks would cover it, id also be gettin the rear end gasket replaced couse its leakin to. how much u guys think it will cost me?
yikes, thats pretty expensive. but labor wise it should take like 5or6 hours. my boss knows what hes talkin about couse hes a certified mechanic. and he didint say it was the rear main he said somthing else, so idk, ill have to get a estimite at the Rip Off napa here in town. thanks for the info.
If your leaking transmission fluid its not the rear main seal its the front seal in the tranny, you can do it yourself ,you'll need a floor jack, the new seal and fluid, you may as well buy a new screen,it will come with a pan gaskett, unbolt the pan and let out the fluid, replace the screen and gaskett, then set up your jack with plywood between the trans and the jack.Unbolt the driveshaft, remove the conections for the modulator valve, unbolt the transmission coolinlines from the tranny, loosen the crossmember bolts, get the jack up to support the trans ,make sure its ballenced ,ubolt the bell housing ,lower the trans, remove the tork converter, you'll see the front seal remove it ,relace with the new one,put the converter back and put it all back together. If you've never droped a trans before this will take the better part of the day but it beats paying a butt load of money to someone else.Find a Haines book for your truck and it will give you better details then what I did.
thats what ill probly end up doin, a friend of mine knows how to drop a tranny, hes done it a couple times before so ill have some help there, thanks for the info though.
