2001 escape shifter cable needs to be replaced or adjusted. the shift move's ok but don't go into the right gears and has lot of loose play in it . anyone tell me how to fix this or what to look for that is the cause of the problem . thanks

I would look at both end clamps for the outer housing and the actual cable ends where they attach to the shift lever on the column and the top of the transmission. If the housing can move, it will allow more 'slop' in the cable. If the ends are loose, it will not move as purposefully as designed.
The steering column cover likely has several screws on the bottom that can be removed to gain access to the actual lever. The other end is visible looking more or less underneath the large tube feeding air to the engine.

shift cable

the shift cable looks good in the column but where it hooks to the bracket on the motor it's tight but there is a round plastic piece that is moving up and down when the gear shift lever is moved from park to neutral and drive . when i put it in neutral it's in rev. if I try to put it into 1 st and back into park it will only go into neutral . is that plastic piece broken inside it's housing or is it suppose to move like that ????

I'm not sure what you mean.
NOT the end at the trans, right?

I've had them where the end at the trans loses the inner plastic ball thing and the cable pops off and the people can't shift it. You can get a 90 degree dremel with a small drill bit, put a hole in the round rod and do a clip and washer like an old school carb linkage and just periodically make sure the clip is in good shape. Otherwise, the cable fails fairly often and isn't cheap and it's just that stupid inner bushing thing in the trans. end.

To me, I have a feeling you mean something else.

shift cable

I wish I could take a picture and post it but I don't know how. let's try this . the lever that come's out of the trans has the end of the cable hooked to it from that point the cable extends up about 10 or 12 inch's and hook's into a bracket on the side of the motor . well the point where the cable goes through the bracket it's about 2 inch dia. plastic tube and the cable goes through that tube but the cable also has a round plastic piece that seem's to slide up and down inside that tube when the shift is moved so my question is could this plastic part be broke inside or is it suppose to move like that . I locked vise grips on it and stopped it from moving and found that well correct the problem but not perfect . I checked with local auto parts store's and they don't have any cable's with this plastic tube attached to it . they only have straight cable's with adjustment nut's on both end's .
