Sounds like you might have a problem with the Manifold Air Temp sensor. Which the PCM also uses to adjust fuel and timing. Which would explain your mileage problem. You need a scan tool such as AE or Torque Pro
Hey I have the intake off of the truck or spider most people call it. I looked at that AIT sensor and it's covered in oil do you think that's affecting it?

Yes it is. I'm sure that plays a role too.

Could be. But now that you welded the pedestal shut, you don't have a way to test it if you clean it. Atleast not without a scan tool.

My edge says the one that connects to the air box is reading the same temperature as the outside temperature. The sensor on the manifold is a different story! I'll have to get a scan tool like you said and see what's going on with that. A new sensor from the ford dealer is $30. Other than that my parts showed up early so the truck is all back together and runs great!

sounds like your edge does more than I thought it would. Either way, you identified the problem. $30 is an easy repair to swallow.

quick question before I replace this. this article says that the good temp sensor should read a few degrees cooler than the coolant temp sensor. They must be reffering to the one mounted on the spider itself ince its tucked away in the valley of the motor i can see that getting much hotter than the one on the intake box. BUT! if thats the case then shouldnt the one on the intake read much lower than the other air temp sensor? i unplugged the one on the air box and my truck defaulted to 58 degree. i will go unplug the other one and see if i notice a difference. ill play around with this for a bit.

Engine Air Temperature Sensor

thats about all the info i can find on the sensor but thats the sensor on the spider.

nevermind i checked the resistance and my edge said 154 degree for engine oil temp or operating temp whichever they call it on there. i believe its operating. but the senor measured 7.55 ohms so i went to the chart and 7.55 ohms is roughly 140 degrees. the truck was sitting when i tested it that time. so i drove it around the block quick came back tested it again and came up with 13.something which is between 122-104 degrees. this time the edge said 162 degrees for the engine operating temperature. i'm about to take it on a decent drive then i will check it as soon as i park and see what it says but im leaning toward you are right the sensor is bad.

(im referring to the chart i added a link to in the last post i made)

I would have check it with a cold engine. The sensor should show about what the ambient outside temp is.
