Hey all I have a v10 I'm looking at buying to use as a plow truck. It'll be a driver, getting used for landscaping as we'll, and from
What I can gather these are very reliable engines, with more than enough power in a gas platform. How does it compare to a 5.4 mileage wise? It's a 99 2v engine, and also, from what I understand is the v10 2v spits plugs, like the 5.4 but not on such a large scale? Any info would be helpful thanks.
The 5.4 and the v10 get about identical fuel economy. Bad.
The V10 does spit plugs.. I'm not aware of the 5.4 doing it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I've got more experience with the 3V 5.4 than the 2V.
If you do get a V10 make sure it has something lower than 3.73 gears. Especially if you're plowing and towing.
My 99 SD SC 4x4 6.8 automatic gets between 10-12 MPG. It has 177k on it and is well maintained. It has never spit a spark plug (knocking wood).. Smooth as silk and runs like new.
It is a relatively strong engine, but not as strong as the 8.1 GM it replaced.. Then again if you look at the displacement difference, you'd know why. 413 CID vs. 496 CID...
I have a 2006 SD KR 4x4 6.8 and I get around 10MPG, but I didn't buy it for the mileage, I bought it to tow a heavy travel trailer (18k). Even if (when) gas gets to be $5 per gallon, I'll still be using this rig as my daily driver! I have just over 101k miles on it and it has been immaculately maintained from day one. All fluids used have all been synthetic, but changed at conventional recommended intervals. I've only had to replace the battery, alternator, plugs, and brakes so far. I, too, have never had the engine spit a plug and it runs like new. This is probably the only vehicle I've ever purchase where I've had absolutely no buyer's remorse...the best truck I've ever owned!
