5.4 vs V10

Been looking at new trucks and was wondering if anybody has had a 5.4 and then went to a V10. Is there any noticable diiference in power or mileage between the two? Thought about a diesel, but just not sure it is practical.
I like my 5.4 that I have until I put a stock trailer on it, and then I need more power on the hills. Thanks

V10 all the way. I own a V10 and drive 5.4s all day long at work. The 5.4 is a good engine, even in a heavy truck. They have some decent power until you put a trailer behind them. I pull a 5K pound trailer with the 5.4 and the thing is just a lug. Unloaded I like it. I get in my V10 after work, press the gas, and almost smoke the tires because I'm not used to the power lol. I put 10K pounds behind my V10 with 3.73 gears and it feels like there is nothing there. For thr $600 option and about the same fuel mileage it is the way to go IMO.

I towed my '56 Chevy from Cleveland, OH to Florida behind a Budget van with a 5.4. On the flats it wasn't bad, but as soon as I hit the mountains in KY/TN, it was a total dog. I was lucky to hit 40 MPH up the grades, and I had my foot to the floor (let 'er blow, it's a rental!). I have a V-10 in my F-350, and while I have yet to tow my car with it, I've towed a friend's boat and could hardly notice that it was back there. I also pulled a '72 F-100 with a 26' boat and trailer out of a buddy's yard. Hurricane Ivan buried it up to the frame in sand. The V-10 walked it right out. And gas mileage is about the same with either (they both suck). But in my opinion, if you're in the market for a Super Duty, fuel economy isn't a primary concern.

I took everyones advice on here. Traded my 5.4 for the V10 and this past weekend was the first chance I had to tow our TT with it. They do not exagerate. There is no comparison in the power. As far as mileage, the 5.4 was just a little bit better when empty but the V10 is superior when towing.

ya my dads v10 dually CC has loads more power than mine...he has a 2v v10 and i have a 3v 5.4... now i tow nothing at all and its perfect for me...i get better mpg than him...and i like the sound of my v8 better...but if your towing, the v10 is the way to go...my sisters b/f used my truck to tow his jeep and going through the mountains he said it was horrible but on the flats it was fine

I've had both and the 5.4 was great empty, but you'll be glad you bought the 6.8 when you're towing. If you tow a lot you'll actually find the V10 will average better mileage, especially on flat ground, because it doesn't have to work as hard.
In the long run the fuel mileage and initial cost are negligible, the power won't be.

5.4= little to no towing
6.8= moderate to heavy towing
7.3/6.0/6.4= towing heavily constantly
