Howdy all,
I'm planning to buy an 05' SD CC SB 4X4 F-350 or F250, and I'm kinda hung up on which gas engine to get. I do have a 2004 27' TT Rockwood camper, which would be the heaviest thing I tow right now.Truck would be a daily driver to work, etc. towing most weekends for camping, mountains, desert not far away.
Preferably 4:10 gears, either transmission will do. Is there that much difference in mpg to warrant a 5.4?How does the 5.4 stand up to strong headwind? I live in a very windy state (I set myself up for that one! )
and I would like to be able to hold a steady speed while towing or lite.
Any other observations will be appreciated!!
Get the V-10. MPG is similar between the 2. Youll have plenty off power to tow your camper regardless off the wind with the V-10. The V-10 is only a $600.00 option so it wont break the bank. When you drive a truck as big as the superduty you want power and the V-10 will provide it. Forget the 5.4 get the V-10 youll be happy.
Ditto the V-10! I've got the 5.4 with 3.73 gears in a crew cab. It's adequate for daily driving, but has a lot to be desired when towing. Head winds slow it a lot and I would not want to pull a travel trailer with it. My next truck will have the V10. Mileage is about the same. I average 12 mpg empty and about 10 pulling a 4000# trailer. I've talked with V10 owners gettig better mileage doing both. The V10 works less to do the same work, so it burns less fuel to do the same job.

I drive a 2002 F-250 Superduty 4x4 Reg cab XLT V-10 Six speed.
I use it as a daily driver,to plow snow, and tow as much as 10,000 lbs
and it never skips a beat! Get the V-10!
THANKS Everyone! I had the same problem & was leaning to the V10. I will be ordering me a F350 CC 4X4 with the V10 & 410 limited slip. This will replace my 2000 F350 with a PSD.
I just don't want a diesel anymore. The truck is great, but I feel the gasser is better in mud or seems to be . Places where I took my 3/4 dodge with a 360 with no problem , just about stick my PSD , because of the weight issue. Tired of the noise , 15 qt oil changes, stuff like that. The diesels are great engines & I'm not flaming them at all. I tow an ATV on a trailer alot & a boat about 3000 lbs so I definitly don't feel the need for the diesels. The V10 is overkill too, but I wouldn't own a 1/2 ton 4X4 anymore. I feel the 3/4 & 1 ton trucks are built heavier thus hold up better under harsher conditions such as bad roads etc.
the 5.4 in the 150 seems to be under powered so in a superduty i would get the v10. the truck i am going to get, i can only get the v10 or psd and i am going to get the v10
I have a 2000 sd 5.4, 4.10's/4" lift & 35's and it's not what I expected. May go with 4.56's to help turn the tires. It needs a torque monster motor because these trucks are pretty freakin big and once you start goin big you can't stop!
I have a 5.4 F250 and I love it, I dont find it under powered BUT I got it knowning I would not be doing any major towing or hauling, in fact a F150 would have been fine but the rebates were so good on the new F250's at the end of 2003 I figured what the heck and bought it off the lot. I do think that if I did a lot of towing or hauling I would go with a diesel though, and skip right over the V10.
i had a lot of help here from the v10 forum gang,5.4 and 6.8 get almost the same mpg and as i tow a boat a lot , my 250 is coming with the v10, 600 clams where can you really go wrong. good luck
