I'm buying a AOD to replace my C6. Naturally to save money I'm buying one from the junk yard and I'm going to rebuild it. Any advice and/or knowledge on this process?
clean clean clean be sure to find and test all parts and all the proper clearances and thicknesses of all parts re used or installed the valve body comes to mind on these trucks make sure that is clean and nothing stuck or worn tapered inside other than that its straight forward. and make sure you toque everything exactly everything.
well their are very little gears automatics have planet gear set ups so they are always meshed your wet friction clutches and steels are what make the different gears and engage and disengage. do you have a drive train service manual as this is a must if your not sure of every thing that needs to be done. these transmissions are simple and nothing like a standard transmission but it can be done their are a lot of small parts and seals and adjustments do different thing slike overdrive and small things like shift cables.
Only problem I had rebuilding an aod was a very large diameter seal which needed something like a ring compressor to hold it compressed while I pushed the piston it was on into its cylinder. That was a long time ago, don't remember the details. I remember I used a small pick with a dull point to help push the lip of the seal into the cylinder.
