AOD Rebuild

Well the ole-lady burnt my forward clutches in my 1985 F-150...

Now my questions is, is the AOD (2wd) self rebuildable (i have no special tools) or should i take it into a shop.

I would like to try it, but dont wanna mess it up, you understand what i mean.

Another question i have is where to get a rebuild kit that covers everything. Not to mention i wanna get a shift kit too, as to eliminate excessive shifting and have it hold gears longer.

I use the truck as a cruiser, no towing and if there was it would be VERY light. 302 EFI in it.

You need various sizes of snap ring pliers for sure, a pair of slide hammers make pullin the front pump off very easy. You will need a standing foot controlled spring compressor unless you have a light duty arbor press. I cant remember if the AOD needs any other special tools. But if you want to upgrade it look for a Transmission shop that is known for good work. or just specifically does performance mods.
They can get every single part for just a rebuild or upgrade. The AOD might have a package where you can get a kit that has a couple more friction plates and steel plates for the clutch drum and some other parts required for handling more horsepower. I berely remember how the AOD went when i took it down in school. I'd just go to a shop and get it done with someone who has experience ya know. But if it has an adjustable modulator you can delay shifting by a turn of a screw or lengths of differant pins you can do yourself.
If it would be your first time doing something of this sort, get a easy trans for cheap like C4 or GM TH350 those are easy transmissions for practicing on. Get a Motor or Chiltons transmission manual that will guide you through the teardown and build up.

i dont wanna just do it for fun, i wanna rebuild the one in my truck that has the forward clutches burnt, lol.

Im thinking tho, since ive never had any problems with it before i canjust replace the clutch system, and then get a shift kit (which i need anyways) and i should be good. I dont plan on building a monster motor in front of this tranny, just a mild street truck. No big motor mods, its my cruiser.
